Dr. Simon Mezgec je visoko citiran raziskovalec na področju razpoznavanja slik hrane. Od leta 2011 se ukvarja z različnimi problemi računalniškega vida, od zaznavanja prometnih znakov do obdelave medicinskih slik, od leta 2014 pa se osredotoča na razpoznavanje slik hrane in pijač, za kar uporablja pristope globokega učenja oziroma – bolj specifično – globoke nevronske mreže. Leta 2019 je bil izbran kot finalist evropske nagrade DSM Bright Science Award, leta 2020 pa je dosegel 2. mesto na edinem mednarodnem tekmovanju v razpoznavanju slik hrane Food Recognition Challenge.
